Simpson College Community Orchestra Concert

Under the baton of Dr. Mike Eckerty, the orchestra will perform works by Aaron Copland, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Robert Schumann during this hour-long performance.   A reception following the concert will allow audience members to visit with the musicians in the orchestra.  The concert and reception are free and open to the public.  The entire family is invited to attend.

Copland's Outdoor Overture will begin the concert.  The American composer Elliott Carter has written about the piece,  "Its opening is as lofty and beautiful as any passage that has been written by a contemporary composer. It is Copland in his prophetic vein."

Vaughan Williams' Norfolk Rhapsody #1 is based on folk song melodies collected by the composer in his native England.  The piece begins with a slow introduction based on two songs, "The Captain's Apprentice" and "The Bold Young Sailor".  The faster, middle section features three folk songs: "A Basket of Eggs", "On Board a Ninety-eight" and "Ward the Pirate". The final section closes quietly with the return of the original melody.

Schumann's Fourth Symphony was described by the composer as "a symphony in one movement".  This may be an allusion to the unity across the four movements of the thematic material, which is introduced in its elemental form in the mysterious, slow opening.
