This Top Five series will feature experts in human resources, marketing, accounting, IT and others. They will introduce five things on certain topics that will help you be successful in your small business.

In 2014, according to the US Census Bureau data, there were 5.83 million employers in the United States. Firms with less than 20 workers made up 89.4% of those businesses. You can imagine, in an organization with 20 or less employees, managers are wearing multiple hats. One of those many hats is likely Human Resources. The workplace continues to change; it’s becoming more diverse, more regulated and more unpredictable. And the challenges and risks facing employers today have never been greater. There is a high probability of a trade-off being made between compliance and resources. This session is to provide you with the knowledge to know where common mistakes are made, what you can do to address them and when it may be necessary to seek out an HR professional (or possibly an attorney) for guidance. The session follows the employment life cycle, from hiring to separation. At the end of the seminar, you should be able to: Describe the HR issue, its significance, and the impact it may have on the employer/employee relationship Recognize common pitfalls employers struggle with Create an action plan, specific to your organization, which may help to correct current issues and create a proactive, preventative plan to move forward Scott Gire is an HR Services Area Manager with Oasis, a Paychex® Company, where he leads a team of HR professionals who support direct line supervisors with employee relations matters and consult with senior business leaders on the achievement of their strategic HR initiatives. Scott and his team recognize the common pitfalls experienced by organizations and support them in creating policies, procedures and action plans to correct existing concerns and ensure compliance moving forward. With more than 20 years’ experience in human resources and training in the service industry, he truly understands the power of human capital management and the impact on business results.
