Simpson College Community Orchestra Concert

The Simpson College Community Orchestra will celebrate its tenth anniversary with a concert on Sunday, Dec. 4th, at 7:00 pm in the Blank Performing Arts Center.  The hour-long concert is free, as is the dessert reception that follows.  Families with children are welcome.

The orchestra is excited to perform a new orchestration of a medley featuring three African American Christmas folk songs.  Audience members will be familiar with the uplifting "Go, Tell It On The Mountain!".  "Rise Up Shepherd and Follow" and "Brightest and the Best" (also known as "Star in the East") will also be featured.

For lovers of brass music, the Hubert Parry Symphonic Variations features a brass interlude that showcases the lower brass instruments.  With its sweeping melodies, the piece also highlights the strengths and characteristics of each instrument in the orchestra.

For lovers of the lower string instruments, the Eight Russian Folk Songs by Lyadov highlights the warmth and sweetness of the violas, cellos, and basses.  In "Upon Hearing the First Cuckoo of Spring", bird lovers will hear a lone clarinet sounding the bird's distinctive call.

Please come celebrate good music, community, and the spirit of the season with the orchestra and your neighbors.  For more information, call the Simpson College Music Office at 515-961-1637.
