Powering Businesses With Hyperlocal Creators
Speakers: Emily Steele and Charise Flynn, co-founders of Hummingbirds
Hummingbirds is a platform that connects brands to hyperlocal content creators & social media enthusiasts. Brands looking to drive local awareness and sales rely on the Hummingbirds platform to facilitate word of mouth marketing at scale. Creators (who they call "hummingbirds") sign up, view campaigns they can do in their own backyard, and post about their experience on social media to local friends and followers.
From large brands like Olipop and Goodles to multi-location franchise brands to DMOs to beloved local organizations like performing arts orgs, museums, and amusement parks, Hummingbirds solves the problem of helping brands create local behavior by giving local people a chance to experience and share them to their trusted network.
Emily Steele started the company in 2018 as part of her marketing agency in Des Moines and launched the standalone SaaS product in 2023 shortly after Charise Flynn joined as cofounder. To date, the company has raised over $4M and has grown across 16 cities, bringing local influence to communities across the US.
Learn & Discuss:
- How to tap into the power of word of mouth
- Building a tech-enabled platform for a two-sided marketplace

With just a handful of key concepts, Changemakers can enable change in an organization in a way that protects business interests, empowers people, and simplifies the process. Join us in this session to learn more.
Changemakers are the individuals who put the good of the organization first, make authentic human connection, and consistently treat change as a process, not an event. They make things happen. - To get more done
- To bring people along
By attending this course, participants will:

Making Artful Goods for Everyday
Speakers: Meg and Chad Gleason, owners of MogleaMoglea is a Des Moines-based studio that focuses on the craft of artful stationery and home goods. Each piece is one-of-a-kind using hand-applied production processes (queue painting videos). The production team thoughtfully applies layers of paint to extra thick sheets of paper before cutting them down, yielding completely unique compositions. Each piece is finished on one of their antique presses, where it is foil stamped, printed, or die cut using traditional letterpress printing processes.
Meg and Chad Gleason started Moglea back in 2012 after exhibiting their first Moglea stationary line at the National Stationery Show. While living on a farm in Audobon, Chad designed the first studio on the same property as their farmhouse, which later reignited his passion for designing furniture (see the new Francis Chair line)! Due to the challenges of keeping staff in a small town, the Gleason's moved Moglea to Des Moines in 2018.
Today's studio contains all operations, including the design studio, wood prototype shop, pressroom, production studio, and fulfillment. Chad and Meg are still the creative directors of the line.
You don't want to miss this field day and the behind-the-scenes tour of Mogela in the heart of downtown Des Moines!
Learn & Discuss:
- Understanding the studio process using hand-applied production
- Growing a national wholesale market in retail
- Furniture design and bringing new ideas to life
- The balance of being a creative director and business owner
